The Dolphins are signing veteran running back Sony Michel, a league source confirmed to the Miami Herald Monday, adding another player to a crowded backfield.
The 27-year-old Michel, whose signing was first reported by NFL Network, reportedly had a visit with the Dolphins last week. He was the leading rusher for the Los Angeles Rams last season, recording 845 yards and four touchdowns on a 4.1 yard per carry average. Michel also caught 21 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown.
An alum of American Heritage Plantation, Michel was a first-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2018. He played his first three seasons in New England before being traded to the Rams before the start of the 2021 season. Over four seasons, Michel has ran for 3,137 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He’s also caught 47 passes for 386 yards and two touchdowns.
The 5-11, 215-pound Michel joins a backfield that has been upgraded this offseason. The Dolphins signed Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert in the offseason and return Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed, along with Gerrid Doaks.
Mostert signed a one-year, $1.175 million deal but is expected to make the team’s 53-man roster as a former player under coach Mike McDaniel with the San Francisco 49ers. However, the 30-year-old has a lengthy injury history Edmonds signed a two-year deal worth $12.1 million.
The contracts for Gaskin and Ahmed both expire after the 2022 season and have no money guaranteed for the upcoming season.
