The Miami Dolphins are giving Reshad Jones a new five-year contract, locking up the elite safety a season after he suffered a serious shoulder injury.
The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but it will likely put the former University of Georgia standout in the company of the NFL's top-five highest paid safeties. According to ESPN, Jones will receive a five-year, $60 million contract that guarantees him $35 million.
Jones only appeared in six games last season, contributing 51 tackles, half a sack and one interception because he tore his rotator cuff in Miami's 30-15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Last year Jones, who has 555 tackles, 16 interceptions and nine sacks in his seven seasons with the Dolphins, held out during Miami's offseason program, and for one day of minicamp pursuing a new contract.
Jones was slated to make just under $7.1 million this season in what was supposed to be the final year of a $32 million contract he signed four years ago. Jones' goal was to be paid like a top-five safety, and that appears to be reflected by his new deal.
Dolphins executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said the franchise's goal this offseason is to "take care of our own;" referring to Jones and Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis Landry, who is also seeking a new deal.
