Dolphins sign QB Jake Rudock to futures contract

He’s back! Well, maybe the signing of quarterback Jake Rudock doesn’t warrant this level of enthusiasm — but we’re facing a long two months before the start of free agency rolls around. The Miami Dolphins will ensure quarterback Jake Rudock is with the team once more after an uneventful 2019 regular season after the team inked Rudock to a futures contract, which was announced yesterday.

Futures contracts effectively serves as a designation for an NFL team that a player will be on their expanded 90-man roster when the league calendar opens in mid-March — but the players signed to futures contracts won’t count against the team’s 53-man roster or salary cap for the remainder of the prior league season.

Rudock didn’t see the field this season for Miami, but he did offer promise in the preseason with his extended playing time as Miami’s 3rd-string quarterback back in August.

It will be interesting to see if Rudock is able to stick with the team for 2020, given that the Dolphins are likely to add another body to their quarterback room via the 2020 NFL Draft. Between Ryan Fitzpatrick, third year quarterback Josh Rosen, Rudock and a rookie, it figures to be the most competitive quarterback room the Dolphins have seen in quite some time. Honestly, when was the last time the Dolphins had that number of viable passers? And that’s exactly what Rudock is — not a long-term starter or a threat to lead this team to the Super Bowl. But a viable NFL backup quarterback.

As Rosen said during his quarterback battle with Fitzpatrick last season:

“A rising tide raises all ships.”
