Dolphins sign LB Terrance Smith, waive DE Jonathan Woodard

The Dolphins have announced that they have waived injured defensive end Jonathan Woodard — more on him later —  and have signed linebacker Terrance Smith formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith has been in the league since 2016 after signing with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. He has largely played in a reserve role and some special teams thus far in his career. The former Florida State linebacker has a chance to add depth to a linebacker group with the Dolphins. With Mike Hull out for the season and both Kiko Alonso and Chase Allen battling injuries, Smith is in a prime position to battle for a roster spot.

Waiving Woodard is a bit of a surprise — he seemed like a good fit in the new defensive system. However, the defensive end position is wide open and two young players stepped up in the first preseason game against Atlanta.

Undrafted free agents — Jonathan Ledbetter and Dewayne Hendricks — both recorded sacks against the Falcons in last Thursday’s preseason game. Add in veteran defensive ends Tank Carradine and Nate Orchard also flashing ability to get after the quarterback and the numbers game appears to have simply caught up with Woodard.
