Dolphins bench QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, will start Josh Rosen vs. Cowboys

In a stunning about-face, the Miami Dolphins are making a change at quarterback. The Dolphins will start Josh Rosen this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, ending the Ryan Fitzpatrick experiment after just two games.

The news comes on the heels of Dolphins head coach Brian Flores reiterating this morning that Fitzpatrick was the team’s starter “right now,” although the change was decided on this afternoon, Rapoport said.

The Dolphins made the move to sit Rosen at the beginning of the season despite Rosen outplaying Fitzpatrick throughout the preseason. The move, which was justified by Fitzpatrick’s mastery of the offense before the snap, didn’t net much in the way of results — the Dolphins scored just 10 points and Fitzpatrick threw four interceptions.

The time is now for the Dolphins to see what they have in Rosen — his evaluation begins now, and although he may not have a realistic chance to dissuade the Dolphins from targeting a top quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, Rosen will hope to make them think twice over the next 14 games.
