Dolphins select QB, DE and RB in NFL.com mock draft

On Monday after Brian Flores’ introductory press conference, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier stated the team could be interested in selecting a quarterback during the 2019 NFL Draft. In the latest mock draft by NFL.com’s Chad Reuter, the Dolphins do just that, taking Duke quarterback Daniel Jones at No. 13 overall.

“The Dolphins will probably look to move on from Ryan Tannehill. Jones received a first-round gradefrom the NFL College Advisory Committee.”

While the Dolphins will move on from Tannehill according to reports, selecting Jones that early in the draft might not be in their best interest. With Flores expected to switch to a 3-4 hybrid defense, the Dolphins will need to retool that side of the ball.

Jones is a solid prospect as he threw for 8,201 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions in three seasons. However, it would probably be a surprise if the Dolphins were to take Jones at this point.

Reuter also has the Dolphins selecting Texas defensive end Charles Omenihu and FAU running back Devin Singletary in the second and third rounds, respectively. There’s a legit case to be made for the Dolphins picking both Omenihu and Singletary.

The Dolphins finished 29th in sacks in 2018, recording just 31. Also, with Cameron Wake now 37 years old and an unrestricted free agent in March, it is time to find a younger heir apparent. Omenihu recorded 9.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss for the Longhorns last season.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins will likely decide against re-signing veteran running back and Dolphins leading rusher from last season Frank Gore as he will be 36 in May. Drafting a running back like Singletary would provide them with extra depth in the backfield and also insurance if Kenyan Drake leaves after the 2019 season.
