Dolphins rule Allen Hurns, Jomal Wiltz out vs. Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers will come to town this weekend with a collection of injured players longer than than the grocery list. The Miami Dolphins? They’ll have their fair share, too — but only two Miami Dolphins have been officially ruled out for this weekend’s contest.

The Dolphins have ruled out wide receiver Allen Hurns and defensive back Jomal Wiltz for tomorrow’s game — Hurns is still recovering from a nasty hit he took early in Miami’s 31-6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, suffering a concussion on the play. The hit was tough luck for Hurns, who returned to Dallas for the first time since breaking his leg there in last year’s playoffs — Hurns is probably glad he won’t be seeing Dallas on the upcoming schedule again any time soon.

The loss of Wiltz hurts Miami more — Wiltz stepped into the nickel role after the departure of Minkah Fitzpatrick helped solidify responsibilities on the back end. And, to Wiltz’s credit, he showed a fair amount of promise. That is, of course, until he suffered a groin injury against the Cowboys.

Neither status should come as a a surprise — the severity of the hit on Allen Hurns would have had anyone guessing there would be some missed time to recover. And Miami was reportedly expecting Wiltz to miss this game as early as mid-week in the build-up to the game, so the Dolphins should have a plan to deal with his absence. Will the plan actually work?

Well, that’s another story.
