Dolphins reportedly in the mix to sign bridge QB Tyrod Taylor

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported last night that the Miami Dolphins may be in the market for former Bills and Browns starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor, who was last tasked with serving at the Browns starter for a handful of quarters before 2018 top pick Baker Mayfield took the reins (and set the rookie touchdown passes record), is an experienced starter (46).

It’s a non-thrilling play, the potential signing of Taylor. But it does fall in line with what general manager Chris Grier said at the 2019 NFL Combine: “We’re not trying to lose games…We’re going to build.”

How does Taylor fit this model? He fits because he:

A. is a cheap, short-term option
B. is not going to turn the ball over
C. is not going to take charge and win games, either
D. All of the above

This might qualify as a bit of a hot take, but Taylor is a step in the right direction over Ryan Tannehill. He’s more mobile and more protective of the football.

No, Taylor isn’t going to run a lot of two-minute offense and put the team on his back. As a matter of fact, he’s going to leave some aggressive throws on the field. But shoot, so did Tannehill and eliminating some of Ryan’s poor play in the pocket and ball security would at the very least be a refreshing change. Even if the end result on game day is the same.

Taylor isn’t the answer. But he certainly fits the mold of a bridge quarterback to buy Miami a season or so to figure out who is.
