Dolphins reportedly have interest in free agent guard Quinton Spain

Here’s one to keep an eye on, Dolphins fans. At least one report has linked the Dolphins to free agent offensive guard Quinton Spain, formerly of the Tennessee Titans.

The Titans’ interior offensive line is undergoing a make-over with the signing of former Rams guard Roger Saffold, which makes Spain an expendable piece of the line. And, subsequently, a candidate to step into the Dolphins’ starting line-up.

Spain is a player who has his limitations. He’s a power player and not overly effective in space. While Spain does lack some foot speed, it can be mitigated in the right kind of offensive system.

Is Miami a fit from that regard? If they continue their model of pulling bits and pieces out of the New England Patriots’ playbook, it’s very likely that the answer is yes.

The Patriots’ trip to the Super Bowl was centered around smash mouth football and resetting the line of scrimmage up front. And Spain’s bread and butter just so happens to be playing forward.  The former Mountaineer, with 48 starts in 4 seasons, would play directly into the kind of team identity the Dolphins seem to be looking for.

So stay tuned. For a team who are looking for sturdy, physical players up front on both sides of the ball? We may have a match.
