Dolphins reportedly have interest in AAF sack leader Jayrone Elliott

The last time the Miami Dolphins signed a former undrafted pass rusher who led an alternate league in sacks, things worked out pretty well. The reference here is, of course, to Dolphins great Cameron Wake, who will now presumably close out his career in Nashville with the Tennessee Titans. Wake logged 98 sacks in nine seasons in Miami, which sets a pretty unrealistic expectation to match for whomever the next pass rusher to come to Miami is who fits these same criteria.

Ironically enough, Miami has already found one. And they’re interested in making a deal. The Alliance of American Football has closed their doors and their talent is now looking for work. Just days after Miami signed Birmingham offensive lineman Michael Dunn, the team is now hoping to boost their pass rush with the league’s sack leader, Jayrone Elliott.

This, as reported by NFL Draft Diamonds, would be a savvy move for Miami. The team’s pass rush situation right now is abysmal and Elliott is a low-risk addition, even if the team gets into a “bidding war” with other interested parties. And remember, Miami has a few trump cards for bidding wars:

  • Playing time
  • No state taxes
  • Fair weather

Elliott was an undrafted free agent in 2014, originally landing with the Green Bay Packers for three seasons before having brief stints in Dallas and New Orleans. But now, after reinvigorating his image to the league by being a pass rush terror for the Alliance, Elliott has several teams interested, including the Dolphins.
