Dolphins release first depth chart of 2019 preseason

The Miami Dolphins have released their first depth chart of the 2019 season — without too many surprises along the way. The Dolphins are approaching this week of practice and Thursday’s preseason opener as status quo — the results of the first two weeks of practice very much had a hand in defining Miami’s initial pecking order as the Dolphins prepare to face off against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday.

There are a few surprises included in Miami’s listed depth chart, however. First and foremost — the Dolphins were non-committal to RB Kenyan Drake or TE Mike Gesicki, listing others as “OR” alternatives on the depth chart. And yet the Dolphins’ most prominent competition of all has been all Josh Rosen over these last few practices — and yet Ryan Fitzpatrick remains planted in the QB1 role on the depth chart.

Another surprise is the inclusion of Jesse Davis back at right guard — he’s spent the majority of his time at right tackle once former offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was relieved of his duties at the beginning of last week.

There are fewer surprises on the defensive side of the football — aside of the formality of listing Minkah Fitzpatrick as a second string defender in Miami’s safety groupings. We all know Minkah is going to play nearly all of Miami’s reps defensively, provided he’s healthy.

And so with the release of the Dolphins’ depth chart — let it serve as a snapshot of where Miami sits now in their assessment of the roster. But don’t become a prisoner of the moment with Miami’s assignment of any individual player. Not yet, anyway.
