Dolphins release DE Jason Jones two days before playoff game vs. Steelers

DAVIE, Fla. _ The Miami Dolphins have released veteran defensive end Jason Jones two days before the team's playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to a league source, Jones was healthy and his release had nothing to do with a legal issue. However, the team didn't plan on playing Jones against the Steelers for unknown reasons.

Jones, who started five games this season, has 36 tackles, 3{ sacks and broke up two passes this season in the 14 games he played.

His release opened the door for Miami to add a veteran free agent before Sunday's game, or promote someone from the practice squad.

Considering Miami's shortage of linebackers and cornerbacks it is likely that the Dolphins will call up cornerback Bene Benwikere, or one of its two practice squad linebacker, Lamin Barrow or Brandon Watts.

Starting cornerback Byron Maxwell hasn't practiced all week, which means the Dolphins will likely go into Sunday's game with only four cornerbacks on the active roster.
