EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Dolphins’ Week 11 road game against New York Jets on Sunday had the makings of a letdown early on after the team’s big win over the Baltimore Ravens 10 days ago.
Miami was tied at 7 with the New York Jets at halftime after kicker Jason Sanders’ short field goal attempt smacked the top of the right upright and fell no good as time expired.
But the Dolphins regrouped in the second half for a 24-17 victory over their division rival, the team’s third straight game.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 27-of-33 passes for 273 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His 65-yard touchdown pass to Mack Hollins in the third quarter was the longest of his career.
The Dolphins defense came up with some timely stops, including a second-quarter strip-sack by safety Brandon Jones when the Jets were inside Miami’s 10-yard line.
The Dolphins opened the game with an 11-play, 83-yard drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by rookie wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to take a 7-0 lead.
However, after a sharp first drive from Tagovailoa, he threw an interception on his second possession, setting up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to wide receiver Jamison Crowder, tying the game at 7 with three minutes left in the first.
The Dolphins defense kept the Jets away from any points after they drove back into the end zone, as Jones delivered a crushing blow to Flacco’s back, jarring the ball loose and into the hands of defensive lineman Christian Wilkins.
The Dolphins offense couldn’t capitalize off the turnover and struggled outside of their opening possession in the first half. Miami had 83 net yards on the first possession and 73 yards on the remaining five drives, including three points and Tagovailoa’s turnover.
After Tagovailoa’s touchdown pass to Hollins in the third quarter, the Jets tied the game with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Moore, who beat Byron Jones on a short in-breaking route and took the catch the distance.
The Dolphins took a 21-14 lead with 10:35 left with a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Myles Gaskin.
