Dolphins place safety T.J. McDonald on the PUP List

The Miami Dolphins have added another veteran player to the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of their first training camp practice of 2019. The latest addition? Veteran strong safety T.J. McDonald, who joins cornerback Cordrea Tankersley, tight end Dwayne Allen and linebacker Mike Hull on the PUP list this summer.

On the surface, there’s little to worry about with this designation for Miami — it is commonplace in the NFL to buy players nursing some aches and pains or recovering from injuries from the previous season a few extra days of rest courtesy of the PUP list.

Miami holds the right to activate any player on the “active” PUP list at any time, but once a player participates in team drills at practice, they cannot return to the PUP list and must be considered an active player.

It is not immediately clear what injury or ailment McDonald is currently recovering from — he was hampered by a sore ankle towards the end of 2018 but there is no reason to believe that injury would continue to linger with this much rest and rehab.

The Dolphins will take the field this morning for their first training camp practice of the year. McDonald will have to wait a few days, at least.
