DAVIE, Fla. _ The Dolphins placed veteran running back Frank Gore on injured reserve Wednesday, effectively ending his first season with Miami and his 14th NFL season.
Gore, the University of Miami great and five-time Pro Bowler, suffered a foot injury during the Dolphins' road loss to the Vikings last week. The injury will keep Gore out of Miami's final two games of the season.
Now, the focus shifts to Gore's future, whether he will re-sign with the Dolphins or another NFL team, postponing his retirement to play in his 15th season.
"After the season, I'll see. But I still feel good and having fun," Gore said last Wednesday regarding his future.
Gore led the Dolphins with 722 rushing yards, pacing Adam Gase's offense on early downs this season ahead of Kenyan Drake and rookie running back Kalen Ballage.
Gore, 35, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
By missing the Dolphins' final two games, his streak of starting 122 consecutive games and playing in 126 consecutive games comes to an end.
Gore finished this season 154 yards shy of finishing with 1,000 all-purpose yards, which would have been for the 13th straight season. Only Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith have achieved the feat 14 times.
Gore has 14,748 career rushing yards, which places him fourth behind Smith (18,355), Walter Payton (16,726) and Barry Sanders (15,269).
Gore is the 13th Dolphins player to be placed on injured reserve this season. The Dolphins signed former University of Miami defensive tackle Kendrick Norton, a rookie, to the roster to fill Gore's spot.
