Dolphins LB Raekwon McMillan claims refs told him to ‘stay off Tom’

Not much went well for the Miami Dolphins on Sunday against the New England Patriots — but even when things did, there was pushback. At least that’s the account of Sunday’s activities according to Miami Dolphins linebacker Raekwon McMillan, who got some feedback from an official after placing a legal hit on Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

The message?

“Stay off Tom.”

Kind of flies in the face of the point of football, doesn’t it? The NFL has endured big losses at the quarterback position early this season, with Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Cam Newton all succumbing to injury — plus the Giants pulling the plug on Eli Manning as their starter.

We’d like to think there’s no league wide “initiative” to protect the top quarterbacks, but it is undeniable that some quarterbacks, like Tom Brady, have gotten the benefit of the doubt from officiating crews before. The downside to such an unwritten agreement? Teams that don’t have top tier quarterbacks never get the benefit of the doubt.

Like the Dolphins.
