Dolphins kick off three day voluntary mini-camp today

While the majority of the NFL is just getting their feet wet with off-season workouts this week, the Miami Dolphins are one of the select few teams that get to blaze ahead with more advanced coaching and workouts. It’s a bittersweet opportunity — teams on the accelerated timeline are the same ones that have had coaching changes this offseason.

The Dolphins — under the leadership of Brian Flores — may be ahead, but it is only because they are also behind. Franchises who have their staff in place from last season will have a fraction of the issues Miami will have as it relates to uploading their offensive and defensive systems. Learning the playbook is such an instrumental piece of any off-season and the Dolphins will have to learn quite quickly to stay on pace with the rest of the league, even with their two week head start on everyone else.

Ultimately, Miami will find out in no time at all who meets their desired level of football acumen. Brian Flores has spoken often about his desire for a smart, disciplined football team. Players who are comfortable handling the bulk of the team’s playbook quickly are the ones most likely to gain favor with Flores and his staff going forward.

Future interviews and press conferences figure to be telling, considering who the staff is quick to cast compliments towards.
