Dolphins host QB Jordan Love ahead of NFL’s draft visit shutdown

The NFL has axed any future top-30 visits for 2020 NFL Draft prospects as a precaution to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak across the country. But the Miami Dolphins, to their credit, were able to fast track a few visits right before the buzzer — getting some valuable face time just before the NFL’s mandate on visits was passed down.

One of Miami’s critical visits came yesterday by Utah State quarterback Jordan Love — a gifted but inconsistent player who has drawn some (ambitious) comparisons to Patrick Mahomes on account of his play style, arm talent and mobility.

More than anything, getting added face time with a smaller school prospect like Love could provide some added clarity on who should serve as Miami’s primary backup plan if their top quarterback choice is off the board when the Dolphins pick. The buzz around Miami has largely been centered around Tua Tagovailoa — but what happens if Tua is gone when Miami picks? Or what happens if Tagovailoa’s hopeful throwing session is called off on account of the coronavirus outbreak and Tagovailoa isn’t able to appease the concerns surrounding his full recovery between now and the draft?

The Dolphins deserve credit for preparing for anything and everything, including looking intently at both Love and Oregon’s Justin Herbert (his Pro Day was earlier this week) as viable options in Miami’s quarterback search.

Whether or not Love earned himself the heart of the Dolphins’ front office may never be known. If Tagovailoa is the pick, Miami will avoid the potential choice of any of the other quarterbacks. But there’s no denying Love’s physical talent — and it is understandable why the Dolphins would want to spend as much time with him as possible to determine if they feel he’s the right quarterback between the ears to lead the team.
