Dolphins hoping to work miracle, trade DE Robert Quinn

When the Dolphins traded for defensive end Robert Quinn last spring, the hope was that Quinn would re-invigorate the Miami Dolphins’ pass rush group and breath new life into the defense.

That, like just about everything else the Dolphins tried in 2018, didn’t work. Now, a year later, the Dolphins are staring down the barrel of a re-build. But they aren’t going to just give up every asset that they have for free.

First, we’ve seen this team working hard at trying to get something…anything they can get for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. And now we know the team is hoping to get something for Quinn as well.

This would be a stunning development for the team. Getting anything at all in return for Quinn, he of bloated salary and poor production, would be a coup. The whole world knows the Dolphins won’t have Quinn (28-years old) and his nearly $13M cap hit on the books for next season.

So why trade an asset for Quinn when you can simply wait out the Dolphins and target him as a free agent?

The hope, at least for Miami, is that with the well of pass rushers all but completely dried up thanks to the franchise tag, a team will look at Quinn’s prior resume and feel he’s worth a risk to ensure he’s brought in.

But based on Quinn’s last few seasons, anything will be an over-pay…especially when considering his base salary is $11.81M next season plus the trading partner would be giving up a draft pick as well.

So while Miami continues to hope for some off-season magic, Dolphins fans would be wise to avoid holding their breath that something gets done.
