Amid excitement for the Dolphins 2018 season, Miami's opener was met with a somber moment during the third quarter.
The Dolphins honored former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High assistant Aaron Feis as their 2018 George Smith Coach of the Year.
Feis' wife Melissa and daughter Arielle took part in a ceremony on the Hard Rock Stadium field honoring Feis during the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
Fans in attendance gave them a standing ovation.
Feis, a 37-year-old offensive line coach and security guard, has been remembered as a hero after he lost his life protecting Douglas students during the Parkland mass shooting at the school on Feb. 14.
Feis ran into the building where the attack was happening and shielded students from gunfire.
He was one of 17 people killed during the incident. Another 17 were injured.
Since the shooting, the Dolphins have participated in a number of outreach activities to aid the Stoneman Douglas community, including providing financial support to victims and their families, and inviting Feis' family and senior members of the football team to announce selections on the third day of the NFL draft.
Feis, who lived in Coral Springs, played a significant role for the Douglas football team, having a hand in football operations and college recruiting. He was also the school's junior varsity football coach for eight years.
Feis played center for the Eagles from 1995-98, and graduated in 1999. He returned to his alma mater as a coach in 2002.
