The Miami Dolphins will surely miss Davon Godchaux for however long he is injured and away from the Dolphins’ lineup. Miami managed to lock down a shutout in Week 6 without Godchaux on the field, but Miami does not appear willing to stay content with the depth on their roster — the team hosted three defensive tackles yesterday for workouts as the team looks to find some finality to the transition away from Godchaux for the time being.
Perhaps this is a move spurred on by the shoulder injury to Raekwon Davis that forced him to the locker room late in Miami’s win against the Jets as well. But either way — Miami welcomed three to the facility yesterday: all of which are A-gap defenders.

This trio of defensive tackles are all tipping the scales at over 320 pounds apiece — so it is quite clear that Miami is looking for a heavy hitter to play in the heart of the defense and set the anchor for Miami’s linebackers to flow freely to the ball. 2020 UDFA Benito Jones was elevated to the active roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Jets and played 8 snaps in the Dolphins’ rotation. And while the tryouts aren’t necessarily an indictment of how Jones handled his first live game action, he clearly didn’t slam the door shut on the opportunity to lock down the position — otherwise the Dolphins probably wouldn’t be hosting other players at his position on Tuesday to try to add to the roster.
These tryouts come on the heels of a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that Miami attempted to sign veteran NT Damon “Snacks” Harrison off the Seattle practice squad, to no avail.

This position group will continue to evolve over the next year as the team decides what to do with Godchaux’s expiring contract. But for now, Miami is hoping to keep a good thing going by securing the right player to rotate into the mix and play physical up front.
