Dolphins Hall of Famer Jim Langer passes away at 71

It has been a horrible summer for the historic figures of the Miami Dolphins’ proud past. It was only weeks ago that Dolphins’ Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti passed away at the age of 78. Yesterday the Miami Dolphins announced that they had lost another Hall of Famer — Jim Langer has passed at the age of 71.

Langer was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 — entering football immortality alongside fellow Miami Dolphins legend Larry Csonka. Langer was a key piece of Miami’s rushing attack from the moment he first took the field as a Dolphins starter in 1972. He would go on to start 141 consecutive games for the Dolphins between 1972 and 1979.

Langer retired after the 1981 season after spending two years with the Minnesota Vikings.

Langer leaves a legacy that will live on as long as the game of football does. In addition to his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987, Langer also has an award in his name. The Jim Langer Award is given annually to the best offensive lineman in Division II football each season.
