Dolphins fire offensive coordinator O'Shea, two other coaches in staff shakeup

MIAMI _ A day after pulling off one of the NFL's biggest upsets in recent history, the Dolphins dismissed three coaches on Monday, including offensive coordinator Chad O'Shea.

The Dolphins also moved on from offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo and safeties coach Tony Oden.

Coach Brian Flores hired O'Shea from New England, where he was the Patriots' wide receivers' coach. In his only year as Miami's offensive coordinator O'Shea guided a unit that was 27th in yardage.

"I want to thank Chad, Dave and Tony for their hard work and commitment this season. This was not an easy decision but one I felt was best for the future of the Miami Dolphins," said Flores.

O'Shea's offense maximized the talents of receiver DeVante Parker and tight end Mike Gesicki, but O'Shea made several play calls that were regrettable, including a failed two-point conversion attempt at the end of Miami's loss to Washington.

DeGuglielmo replaced Pat Flaherty as Miami's offensive line coach five days into training camp and immediately replaced veteran Chris Reed with third-round rookie Michael Deiter as the starter at left guard. His unit finished worst in the league in sacks permitted and struggled to create holes for a running game that averaged only 3.3 yards per carry and produced the fewest rushing yards in franchise history.

Oden and running backs coach Eric Studesville were the only coaches retained by Flores from Adam Gase's staff. Oden oversaw Eric Rowe's smooth transition from cornerback to safety, but that ultimately was not enough to keep his job.
