One of Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s cricket records was shattered on Friday when Dolphins duo Morne van Wyk and Cameron Delport shared an incredible 367-run unbroken stand in a South African domestic contest.
The opening pair remained in tandem for the entire innings against the Knights in a Momentum Cup match in Bloemfontein to set a new record partnership for any wicket in the 52-year history of limited-overs cricket.
It surpassed the 331-run alliance of Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid for India’s second wicket against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999. Dolphins captain van Wyk, formerly of the Knights, led the way with an unbeaten 175 with Delport hitting half a dozen of his 130 balls for six in an innings of 169 not out.
A dramatic day-nighter appeared to be heading for a spectacular conclusion when Reeza Hendricks and Rudi Second combined with hundreds of their own and at 289-1 in the 44th over the result remained in the balance.
But the departure of both in the space of four Robbie Frylinck deliveries proved decisive as recent Champions League participants Dolphins claimed victory by 25 runs.
