Dolphins cut veteran wide receiver Danny Amendola

The Danny Amendola experience lasted all of one season in Miami. The Dolphins’ latest cap casualty is the 33-year old former Patriot, as the news broke just moments ago.

The decision to cut Amendola isn’t a surprising one, given the Dolphins’ new direction as a franchise and the cost incurred with keeping Amendola on the roster for the 2019 season.

By cutting Amendola, the Dolphins are saving $6M against the salary cap and face no penalties in the way of dead money in parting ways.

Amendola was the team’s leading receiver in both receptions and yardage this past season, pacing the team with modest numbers (59 receptions and 575 yards). But that says more about the state of affairs with Adam Gase’s offense than it does about Amendola’s value to the team.

Aging assets aren’t typically centerpieces of teams looking to rebuild from the ground up, so parting ways with Amendola after just one season makes sense. Don’t expect this to be the last wide receiver cut the Dolphins make before the start of free agency next week, as wide receiver Devante Parker’s $9.38M salary cap is still on the books.

With these kinds of decisions coming down, it’s fair to consider every position fair game as Miami looks to rebuild and re-tool their roster.
