Dolphins cut quarterback Luke Falk, two others

The Miami Dolphins made a handful of roster moves yesterday, cutting three players ahead of the next wave of free agent moves. The Dolphins will be active in free agency once again starting next week, when the timeframe for calculating 2020 compensatory picks closes. Once the window closes, the Dolphins are free to spend money without fear that they’ll lose their projected 2020 3rd-round selection to compensate the team for their loss of RT Ja’Wuan James. Miami’s three roster casualties are:

  • Quarterback Luke Falk
  • Cornerback Dee Delaney
  • Defensive end Jeremiah Valoaga

With the trade for quarterback Josh Rosen, the Dolphins clearly didn’t need to carry four quarterbacks, meaning Falk was expendable. Miami’s departures with a cornerback and a defensive end? Those may be foreshadowing for future moves.

The Dolphins failed to address defensive and cornerback in the 2019 NFL Draft, simply on account of numbers — there were too few picks for Miami to nail everything down. But free agency will offer some potential targets for Miami to help upgrade these positions in the short-term view.

Look for the team to target a right tackle as well, although the Dolphins are so thin on the offensive line that no one should be considered expendable on that front — at least for now.
