Dolphins coach Brian Flores joins ‘Unbuttoned’ with Chris Simms

NBC Sports’ Chris Simms hosts the Unbuttoned podcast and his guest yesterday was none other than Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. Simms and Flores have a bit of a track record, as pointed out by Simms at the top of the show.

“We kinda go back, oddly enough, to early college years. He went and played at Boston College, a good friend of mine from high school, played with you (Flores), Greg. And one day (Flores) showed up in my kitchen with Greg and I said ‘who the hell is this guy’ and we’ve known each other ever since.”

Throughout the course of the podcast, Flores spoke with Simms regarding his upbringing in the New York City public housing, how those experiences helped to shape him and his coaching style, what he hopes to accomplish with the Miami Dolphins and what his experiences in New England were like. Perhaps Flores’ most engaging portion of the interview was talking about his evolution in New England and how that helped him in the interview process with the Dolphins.

“I went from personnel to special teams to offense to defense and then kind of worked my way up defensively. It’s hard, you know? It’s really what it boils down to. It’s not easy to work in New England. It’s not easy to play in New England. But they get the best out of you. They get the most out of you…and you start to go on some head coaching interviews and hear about what this role entails and you’re managing sub-programs, whether it’s strength and conditioning to IT to equipment…I had had a taste of a few of those. You feel like you can lead.”

Getting Flores in a sit-down interview with someone he’s comfortable and familiar with allowed us to see a bit of a different side of Flores, a more candid side.

You can watch and listen to Flores’ full interview with Simms on Unbuttoned here.
