Dolphins agree to sign free agent tight end Clive Walford

How many tight ends is too many? For these Miami Dolphins, the answer is at least more than five. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins have agreed to sign free agent tight end Clive Walford, formerly of the Raiders and Jets.

Walford, a former 3rd-round pick in 2015, fizzled after two promising seasons in Oakland under the watchful eye of now-Dolphins executive Reggie McKenzie.

The addition of Walford to the Dolphins’ roster is hardly a glowing endorsement of the young trio Miami entered this off-season with, headlined by 2018 2nd-round pick Mike Gesicki.

Gesicki and fellow 2018 rookie Durham Smythe have very different skill sets, but neither played at a particularly high level last season. After signing former Patriot Dwayne Allen several days ago, the importance of the tight end position in this offense is now amplified even further as the team adds more competition.

While the terms of Walford’s deal are not immediately available, it is believed to be a one-year contract.
