Dolphins acquire Cardinals QB Josh Rosen, give up 62nd pick

The Miami Dolphins have found themselves a quarterback for 2019 and possibly beyond, trading for Arizona Cardinals QB Josh Rosen with the 62nd overall pick and a 2020 5th round pick.

Rosen, who was drafted 10th overall in last year’s draft, struggled with the Cardinals as they ultimately wound up with the worst record in the NFL, which opened the door for them to take Kyler Murray with the 1st overall pick in this year’s draft, which fell in line with the desires of new head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Now, Rosen will get a fresh start with the Dolphins, who are looking for a franchise quarterback to take the place of Ryan Tannehill after he was traded to the Tennessee Titans for a 2020 4th round pick.

During his rookie season, Rosen threw 217 completions on 393 attempts for a 55.2% completion rate. He also only threw for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his 14 games, posting a measly 66.7 passer rating.

There are some other concerns with Rosen, mainly involving his apparently less than likable personality; many reports came out that Rosen was generally disliked by those who worked with him, and coaches saw him as uncoachable.

Nevertheless, Rosen is known as an extremely cerebral quarterback, which would fit well with the speculated offense that Brian Flores and Chad O’Shea intend to install in Miami, which would be very Patriots-esque and require players to be in certain places at certain times.

Essentially, he’ll be expected to become their version of Tom Brady.

There are many factors that are still unknown regarding this move that only time will reveal: Will Rosen be okay with competing for a job? Can he win over a locker room? Is he truly a franchise-caliber quarterback worth investing time into? Or will he be a one-year rental, getting a chance to prove he’s more than he appeared to be in Arizona?

On paper, the trade is a major win for Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, but how Rosen handles the upcoming adversity he’s about to face, will ultimately decide whether or not that win sticks.
