Dolphin found washed up on Welsh beach

A short-beaked common dolphin became stranded on a beach in Llanelli.

This particular species of dolphin is regularly seen in waters off the Welsh coast and is known for its playful nature.

The reason for the stranding is unclear but could range from disease or underwater noise disturbance, to being caught in a fishing net, according to a spokesman for Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

Dolphins usually become beached in summer months and during breeding season when there are more dolphins in coastal areas.

The carcass was found on Llanelli beach by a member of the public whose dogs became interested in the dolphin as it lay on the sand.

It isn’t the only unusual find on the beaches of Wales. Over the years, rare turtles, mysterious huge skeletons, sharks and even human remains have all washed up on Welsh shores.

If you find a dead whale or dolphin on a beach you should call the UK Strandings Hotline on 0800 652 0333.

If you find a live whale or dolphin stranded ashore in England or Wales should act quickly and call the Rescue Hotline: 01825 765546.
