Dolly Parton teases '9 to 5' sequel for 2019: 'They finally came up with something that makes sense'

Dolly Parton could be breaking ground on the 9 to 5 sequel as early as next year.

The country icon gave The Hollywood Reporter a glimpse of what the second chapter of the cult 1980 comedy may look like, rejoicing at the fact that "after all these years, they finally came up with something that makes sense".

9 to 5, starring Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin, focuses on three women determined to overthrow the patriarchal culture of Consolidated Companies, where they work – naturally – nine-to-five jobs.

The new plot, Parton said, will focus on three younger women working for the same company, who want to learn more about the work done by Parton's, Fonda's, and Tomlin's characters – and end up finding them.

"Hopefully, we might get a chance to start that in the new year," Parton said of the sequel.

"But it's going to really be good – after all these years, they finally came up with something that makes sense and was worthwhile to do."

At the time of the interview, she was expecting to receive a script "within days".

Fonda confirmed in July that the original cast was slated to reunite for a sequel.

"My role is as an executive producer, and I'm working with the writers, with Lily, and talking to the writers," she told reporters during a promotional event, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Right now, Dolly, Lily and I are all intending to be in it."

Rashida Jones and Pat Resnick previously joined the project as script writers.

9 to 5, for which Parton wrote the song of the same name, is in good place to capture a new millennial audience: the tune is featured prominently in Dumplin', a Netflix original film starring Jennifer Aniston.

The movie, which is based on a novel by Julie Murphy, focuses on Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), a Parton fan who enrols in a beauty pageant – which forces her to re-examine her relationship with her mother (Aniston), herself a former beauty queen.
