DOJ indicts Southern Poverty Law Center over alleged informant payments

  • The Justice Department announced a federal grand jury indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), alleging the organization paid $3 million to informants within extremist groups.
  • Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the SPLC deceived donors and concealed these payments using "sham" accounts and "fictitious companies.”
  • FBI Director Kash Patel described the alleged payments as a "$3 million, decade-long scheme to fraudulently fleece Americans."
  • Bryan Fair, CEO of the SPLC, said the organization is outraged by what he called “false allegations” and vowed it will continue its work fighting injustice and defend itself against the DOJ’s actions.
  • Fair also defended the SPLC's use of informants, asserting they risked their lives to infiltrate extremist groups and that the information gathered "saved lives."
