A GROUP of 15 swimmers hit Merewether Baths on Sunday on behalf of the 20 kids diagnosed with the deadly brain stem cancer, DIPG, in Australia each year.
Supporters of local charity RUN DIPG swam a 20-kilometre relay in a bid to raise money for more research into the disease which has claimed the lives of three Hunter children in the past three years.
The swimmers hope to reach their fundraising target of at least $25,000 to support Dr Dun's research.

Newcastle cancer researcher Dr Matt Dun swam the last 2.2 kilometres in memory of his daughter, Josephine, who died of DIPG in 2019. He has been searching for better treatment options since her diagnosis, and hopes to open a clinical trial in Australia this year.
"That $25,000 would support a researcher's salary for a quarter of a year, it may support a PhD student's project for 12 months, and it may contribute to us getting a clinical trial off the ground."
