Access to Bull Island could be restricted in a bid to protect wildlife

Access to the northern end of Bull Island may be restricted in a bid to protect wildlife at the popular tourist spot.

The Draft North Bull Island Action Plan 2020 to 2025 includes a proposal to request people to not visit the northern end of the island.

It is understood that those wishing to walk their dogs can only do so as long as the dogs are on a lead.

The strict regulations come as dogs running free have been branded as “the greatest threat” to birds and seals.

The plan to bring about these restrictions will be put forth to city councillors today, FM104 reports.

Padraic Fogarty from the Irish Wildlife Trust said: “We were really thrilled because this has obviously been an ongoing problem for many years

"Dogs, in particular, are the greatest threat to wildlife on Bull Island

"So many dogs are running around, they're chasing the birds and the seals and it gives wildlife no rest whatsoever.”

Mr Fogarty said that because Bull Island is a nature reserve it has “every protection under the sun” but no actual protection on the ground.

He added: “About 13% of Ireland is protected for nature. There's very little enforcement and very little actual management on the ground for wildlife.

"So wildlife is under pressure all over the place.”
