Dogs plunge 40ft off cliff but miraculously survive and land on beach below

Two pet dogs narrowly cheated death after they plunged 40ft from a cliff - while chasing a crow.

Tracy and Dave Dommett were walking on the headland when their beloved pets, Bella and Autumn, suddenly darted off.

The couple watched in horror as their dogs, both pug and Jack Russell crosses, disappeared over the cliff.

They desperately searched for their pets after the horrific accident above Godrevy Beach, in Cornwall.

Incredibly, the dogs narrowly missed hitting jagged rocks and instead landed on the beach below.

Tracy, 50, said: "It all happened so quickly. We didn't even have time to shout to them and, in a split second, our lives were turned completely upside down.

"I cannot describe the terror we had running to the edge, looking down and realising both dogs had fallen 40 feet.

"I don't know who started shouting and screaming first. We saw Autumn on her side with her back leg kicking but we couldn't see Bella at all.

"I ran to the coastguard station to call 999 while Dave ran to find a way down the cliff to get to them. When he got there both dogs were in shock - Autumn was limping, while Bella had blood coming from her mouth."

The couple, from Buckfastleigh in south Devon, rushed them to a nearby pets in Hayle for initial treatment.

Bella was then sent to specialist vets Eastcott Referrals, in Swindon, Wiltshire, after she smashed her jaw in two places.

Dave, 55, said: "Amazingly, Autumn hadn't broken her leg but Bella had suffered two breaks to her jaw and a misalignment.

"The local vets in Cornwall didn't have the expertise to operate on Bella, so we were referred to Eastcott, in Swindon, where a wonderful vet called Alix Freeman took charge.

"Bella had a full body CT scan which confirmed the injuries to her jaw but thankfully no other problems.

"She then underwent a five-and-a-half-hour operation to repair her jaw by having three plates fitted."

The couple had been enjoying a romantic coastal walk on their wedding anniversary when the accident happened last November.

They are now warning other dog owners to be careful when walking pets on cliffs.

Tracy added: "We are so lucky Bella and Autumn both survived and are truly grateful to have a happy ending. We know it could have been so different.

"That's why we want to share our story with this message - if you are on a cliff walk, even if you have the most obedient dog, then please don't take the risk of having them off the lead.

"We made a silly mistake. When we started the walk the cliff had a gentle descent to the beach but as we followed the path, we didn't realise the cliff edge had turned to a near sheer drop.

"I usually see danger everywhere and put our dogs on leads, however, on that day we just didn't think and we paid for it with all that Bella and Autumn went through."
