Dogs must be kept on leads on cliff walks says council

A council has designated three coast paths near cliffs as areas where dogs must be kept on leads during walks.

Causeway Coast and Glens Council says walks can be potentially dangerous if control is not kept of pets.

Dogs must be kept on a lead at the:

  • Moors coastal headland in Castlerock
  • Nuns’ Walk in Portstewart
  • Port Path at Ballyreagh Golf Course

A spokesperson said: "We wants to remind all dog owners to show responsibility when walking along cliff top paths. Owners are strongly encouraged to keep their dogs on a lead near cliff edges.

"Edges can be loose under foot and cliffs can be home to rabbits and other wildlife. If a dog isn’t on a lead they can be distracted, and this could cause it to fall off the edge.

In the case of an emergency, please call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

In March the Co Derry coastguard warned pet owners to keep their dogs securely on a lead near cliffs following a tragic incident at the weekend.

Coleraine Coastguard said that three local teams were tasked to a scene on Sunday morning after it had been reported a dog had fallen from cliffs close to the Causeway Hotel at the Giant's Causeway.

The dog was located but sadly the family pet had died from injuries sustained in the accident, and was reported to have passed away by a crew member from the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat team.
