Dogs left in cars on hot days should be reported to Council wardens, USPCA says

The USPCA are calling for people to ring council dog wardens if they are concerned about an animal in a hot car.

As the warm weather continues , the charity is warning that ‘hot cars kill dogs’ and pet owners could even face prosecution over a death.

In a statement, they said: “We are extremely lucky with the beautiful weather today and we are even more fortunate to have our pets. Please do not risk their lives and leave them alone in a car, especially on a warm day like this.

“In today’s 24 degree weather the interior temperature of a car can reach a scorching 35 degrees in just 10 minutes and 43 degrees in 30 minutes. Leaving your dog in these high temperatures could result in heat stroke and potentially death. Even if you have left the window open, parked in the shade or are only running an errand for 5 minutes.”

They say that anyone “concerned” for the wellbeing of an animal confined in a car “your first port of call is the Animal Welfare Department at your local council, their details are found on www.uspca.co.uk ”.

They, the charity says, “can liaise with the PSNI to identify the owner and have the animal released from jeopardy”.
