When Harriet McCrudden secured a Community Connections grant from the ACT Government, she knew what would bring her neighbourhood together: dogs, free coffee and some sweet tunes from DJ Sue.

The idea has become a reality with Downer Dog Day happening this Sunday from 1pm to 3pm on the Downer playing fields.

There will be 100 free coffee vouchers up for grabs from the local Gang Gang Cafe and activities for dogs and owners including a photo booth, open mic for dog stories and a puppy art station.

DJ Sue will be spinning some family-friendly music, with a few dog-themed tunes.

The ACT Government says the grants are about creating and maintaining community connection. Harriet, 29, a public servant secured a $2000 grant to create Downer Dog Day.

Harriet said there was already a strong community group of dog owners who met on the playing fields every morning. The Gang Gang Cafe was also "very community-orientated" and Harriet thanked the owners for supporting the event.

Harriet says she was excited to see the event come to fruition and to bring together different elements of the community.

"It's been pretty fun," she said, of planning the day.
