Dogs are attacking and killing sheep at Lyme Park: 'There are signs, but they are just being ignored'

Sheep are being attacked and killed by dogs at Lyme Park .

In the past three weeks, there have been at least eight incidents at the National Trust site in Disley .

Several sheep were attacked and one killed.

Other animals have been left traumatised after being chased by dogs let off their leads - despite repeated signs telling owners not to.

Chris Dunkerley is lead ranger at the Lyme Park and is working with police to tackle the issue.

He said: "We've been having a lot of problems over the last few weeks with sheep being chased by dogs.

"Some have been attacked and severely injured, and one has been killed.

"There are signs up around the field asking people to keep their dogs on leads but they're just being ignored.

"It may be fun for the dog, but it certainly isn't for the sheep. It's stressing them out and scaring them."

He said the sheep belong to a farmer and graze on the land over the summer - something which has been done for centuries.

"They keep the grass short and help maintain the views that people love about Lyme.

"They also provide ideal conditions for things like waxcap fungi to grow.

"If the grass was long, the fungus wouldn't to push itself through."

Sheep attacks are a criminal offence, and police are already investigating one incident at Lyme Park.

Disley Police posted a warning on Facebook, telling owners they must obey the rules.

The post read: "There have been incidents recently where sheep have been attacked/killed by dogs on Lyme Park.

"The rules are simple: if you are in a field with sheep your dog MUST be on a lead, it doesn't matter if your dog is 'well behaved' or 'doesn't chase sheep'."

Chris said action will be taken as appropriate against anyone caught with their dog off a lead.

"These sheep are a farmers' livelihood and he takes great pride in his work," he added.

"For that to be lost through selfishness or neglect by owners isn't fair."

Smoke from the blaze could be seen billowing into the air, the park was closed and people asked to stay away.
