Dog who is mostly deaf and blind 'can still sniff out treats from a mile away'

A dog who is mostly blind and deaf 'can still sniff out treats from miles away' despite her age and health conditions.

Hollie, a 15-year-old Lurcher cross from Huyton, hasn't let her age get in the way of living her life or stomach - to the fullest.

Her owner, Liz Phillips, explained how Hollie's hearing is really bad and can only pick up certain tones or clicks, but this doesn't hold her back.

Liz said: "Of course she takes advantage of this when she wants to go and say hello to someone on the park who has treats, everyone on the local park knows Hollie and Hollie knows everyone on the local park who’s carrying treats."

Hollie left Carla Lane's Animals in Need as a pup to join Liz's family but it is only in recent years her health gradually started to deteriorate.

Despite being a family dog, the pooch prefers Liz's dad, explaining how the pair are inseparable.

Liz told TeamDogs : "If he leaves the room, Hollie will follow, when he goes out she’ll look longingly at the door until he returns."

Hollie, more affectionally known as Hol, isn't the only family dog however, as they also have Pepper Potts, a six-year-old Shih Tzu who was immediately welcomed by Hollie, who took all her puppy antics in her stride and now even mothers her.

Liz said: "She looks after her, she likes to sniff any dogs before they get to Peps on the park.

"A couple of years ago a bigger dog went for Pepper, came running over and launched for her, Hollie jumped in the middle just in time and protected Pepper.

"The other dog stopped in his tracks, turned and ran the other way. Thankfully no dog was harmed, Hollie just growled and the other dog legged it. I’ve no doubt it would have attacked Peps if she hadn’t been there. She’s a hero."

When Hollie and Pepper are with each other, Hollie gets referred to as the giraffe because of the size difference.

In her younger days, Hollie loved her walks, especially along the beach and Liz recalled how she loved to run after a ball on a rope but they knew when she’d had enough though because she would go and get the ball but lie down and refuse to bring it back.
