Detectives investigating a "unprovoked and callous" attack against a jogger are appealing for dog walkers to help with their enquiries.
On Tuesday a man was struck with a piece of wood and suffered head injuries after two males attacked him.
The victim, a man in his 50s, was rushed to hospital after where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Officers said the attack was unprovoked and the man was struck while on a morning run near The Black Pearl, in New Brighton, at about 7.10am.

Two 15-year-old boys have since been arrested, but they were released under investigation.
Police are now making a fresh plea to any witnesses who might have been in the area at the time, including dog walkers.
Detective Inspector Darren Taylor said: “We know there were a number of people on the prom at the time of this unprovoked attack, and we’re keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time.

“It might be that you were out walking your dog at the time, or you live nearby at have CCTV at your home. Anyone who was driving close to the scene around 7am Tuesday morning who has dash cam footage is also asked to come forward.”
