Dog-walker photographs mystery reptile sat on rock in river

A dog-walker claims he spotted a massive turtle sitting on a rock on a river - and has a grainy image of the creature to prove it.

Jon Denham was walking his dog along the River Exe in Exeter on Thursday afternoon when he spotted what appears to be a turtle.

He wasn't sure how the reptile ended up in the river, but was shocked at what he saw.

Jon told DevonLive: "We took the dog for a walk half-an-hour ago when I saw the large turtle on a rock in the river.

"It's a great big turtle.

"I was shocked really, I didn't know that they could live in rivers.

"It's hard to tell why it was there. It was possibly stuck or fell down the weir."

Strangely, it isn't the first time a turtle has been spotted in or near the river.

Last year, flood Defence workers were stunned when a  non-native snapping turtle crawled out of an Exeter riverbed .

It has an incredibly powerful jaw, and can take a persons finger off if they don't treat it carefully.

It is an incredibly unusual find, as the creature is not remotely native to the city or the UK - meaning it is a huge threat to the river's ecosystem.

In fact, the turtle is a threat to most of the natural wildlife on the waterways and the RSPCA warn owners to never release them into rivers.

It is native to North America

It has powerful beak-like jaws

Eat water plants, fish, frogs, newts, snails, worms and snakes

In captivity they can live up to 47 years

It was re-homed by the animal charity.
