Car window smashed to rescue hot dog trapped for two hours

Police officers smashed the windows of a car to rescue a dog who was trapped on one of the hottest days of the year.

A family left their small dog in a locked car for two hours while shopping and returned to find the windows broken.

Police were called at just after 4pm yesterday (July 24) to a coach station car park in Plymouth.

An RSPCA inspector was also called and the dog was taken to be examined by a vet, reports Plymouth Live.

It is believed the dog had been in the car from 2pm until just after 4pm due to a time on the parking ticket.

The Charles Cross police team said the dog was "very happy to be set free!" (@CharlesCrossLPP)

A decision will be made on a possible animal cruelty prosecution.

PCSO Tracy Cunningham said the owners arrived as they were arranging a transporter to remove the car: "They weren't happy with us because their window was put in."

She added it was explained to the family - via an interpreter over the phone - that the matter was serious and police had the right and powers to free the dog due to the heat and risk to its life.

The Charles Cross Police Team said on Twitter: "He was very happy to be set free!"
