Dog 'took her last breath' and died hours after walk in park

A woman was left distraught after her dog died suddenly the day after going for a walk in their local park.

Joanne Howe took her Bordeaux mastiff, Bella, for a lunch-time stroll to Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port on Saturday, July 31.

The 48-year-old said there was nothing wrong with Bella before the walk, but the following morning she began vomiting and her stomach became swollen, before she "took her last breath."

Joanne wants to warn other dog owners about what happened to Bella, who she believes may have eaten something in the park.

She told CheshireLive : “I’m distraught. There was nothing up with her before we went.

“I took her to Whitby Park because it’s opposite my house, she’s a good dog so she was off the leash, then the very next day she was feeling sick and then she took her last breath.”

Joanne said Bella was a seven-year-old rescue dog that she had been with for just over a year.

She believes Bella may have eaten something when she took her eyes off her and wants to warn other dog owners to remain vigilant when out and about with their pets at local parks.

Joanne said she and her partner had planned to take Bella to the vets but they were unable to because of Bella’s condition.

Joanne added: “I don’t know what it was. It was just sudden. I rang the vets and they said we could take her to them but we couldn’t move her because of the condition she was in.

“Her belly was bloated, it could have been something she ate.

“I’d warn people to be careful - keep them on their leash and to keep them close by."
