Dog The Bounty Hunter duped in £400,000 scam weeks after wife's death

Dog The Bounty Hunter was targeted by a cruel scam that almost cheated him out of thousands just weeks after losing his wife to cancer.

Con artists posing as reps from a charity run by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the deputy PM of the UAE, offered him £400,000 to give a speech at a fake convention in Dubai.

US police claim many wealthy celebs have been targetted by the scam, which they say is the new version of the "Nigerian Prince" email of the early 2000s.

The TV star, 66, is still grieving the loss of his his wife Beth Chapman, who lost her battle with throat cancer on June 26.

Last month his literary agent Alan Nevis was contacted with the offer and a contract, which appeared to cover travel, taxes and indemnity and looked convincing.

But neither of them could never talk to anyone on the phone, which scammers said was down to the 11-hour time difference between LA and Dubai.

While the charity's website looked legitimate, Alan was concerned when he discovered that you could only make donations over post or through email.

He then called the hotel where the convention was due to take place and found that there was no such event scheduled.

Organisers also asked for Dog's personal bank details as they claimed they were having trouble wiring the money.

A check arrived in the post for $250,000 (£205,000), which Dog was asked to donate to the charity as part of the deal.

But if he had deposited the check the funds would have vanished and he would have lost the money from his own account.

The scam is the latest blow to hit Dog, after thieves raided his store last week .

His wife Beth died from throat and lung cancer in June after an 18 months battle with the disease.

He announced her death in a heartbreaking tweet, writing: "It's 5.32 in Hawaii, this is the time she would wake up to go hike Koko Head mountain.

"Only today, she hiked the stairway to heaven. We all love you, Beth. See you on the other side."
