A dog taken from outside a River North restaurant last month was reunited with its owner Wednesday after a search effort found the canine 175 miles to the north in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The 17-month-old shepherd mix named Caela was taken from outside Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, 401 N. State St., about 7:20 p.m. Oct. 13 as the owner paid for food inside.

The dog’s distraught owner posted security camera images of the man who took the dog on flyers around the neighborhood as well as on social media.

The effort paid off. On Wednesday, police were able to go to the home of the man who took the dog, according to Oshkosh Police spokeswoman Kate Mann.

”This guy did have the dog, and he told officers that he thought it was abandoned,” Mann said. “The owner did not want to press charges.”

The owner, who couldn’t be immediately reached for comment, and dog were reunited Wednesday night.

Emotional video of the encounter was posted to a Facebook page dedicated to finding the dog.

Chicago police were involved in the investigation and recovery but couldn’t immediately provide any information on the matter.
