Dog shot dead by police after officer bitten while attending 'domestic incident'

A dog was shot dead after a police officer was bitten while responding to an incident in south Liverpool.

Armed police were scrambled to Aigburth when two dogs "could not be subdued" in the aftermath of a "domestic incident".

One of the animals bit an officer who then needed to go to hospital for thigh and arm injuries.

Merseyside Police attended a home on Marmion Road - close to Sefton Park - at 10.45am following reports of what the force described as a "domestic incident".

At the scene they arrested a man on suspicion of section 18 assault, section 39 domestic assault and of an offence under dangerous dogs legislation.

He was taken into custody for questioning.

It was during his arrest that an officer was bitten by one of the dogs. He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

Explaining what happened next, a police spokeswoman said: "Armed officers were later deployed, however two dogs found inside the property continued to behave aggressively and could not be subdued.

"A decision was therefore made to fatally shoot one of the aggressive dogs.

"The second dog, which was less aggressive, was detained by dog patrols."

Officers remained at the scene this evening as investigations into the incident continued.
