Dog saves day as thieves try to break into home in Tallaght, South Dublin in middle of the night

A heroic hound woke up its sleeping owners just in time to prevent a robbery.

The attempted break-in took place in Tallaght at 4:45am on Thursday morning.

The thieves had almost gained entry through the back door when the dog was roused and alerted its owners.

Tallaght Neighbourhood Watch were contacted by the owners from the Tymonville area to not only share the story of the brave dog but to also warn fellow locals, Dublin Live reports.

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokeswoman for Gardaí said they "were alerted to an attempted break in at house on Tymonville Road which occurred at approximately 4.30am on 30 May".

"Nothing was stolen in this incident, no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."

There has been an increase in attempted break-ins in the Tallaght area this month.

At the start of May, eerie footage of a man apparently trying to break into a house in South Dublin was caught on CCTV.

The man tries the handle of the door to see if it's open before making a swift exit.

One of the many doors that he is alleged to have tried in the area belonged to resident Ross Dunne.

Ross told Dublin Live: "He tried our door at 3.30am on Sunday the 28th of April.

"We live in an estate in Tallaght. My wife was feeding our four-week-old baby at the time and we knew nothing about it until a neighbour messaged me at 8:30 the next morning to say his cameras caught someone trying his door at 4 am.

"When I checked mine I realised the same guy was at my house 30 minutes earlier and was clearly just checking for unlocked doors, complete opportunist.

"We had issues in the estate with things being stolen from cars but again they always only get into the unlocked cars. (Obviously an easy fix here is to ensure you lock your doors)."

"We were lucky that we remembered to lock our door though. We could have easily forgotten as we are a little sleep-deprived at the minute with the baby.

Ross contacted gardai and passed the videos onto them.

He added: "Gardai came up to the house and we emailed on the footage but they didn't recognise him.

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokeswoman for the Gardaí said "they attended an incident of public order at a premises in Tallaght".

"A male had been seen by the occupant of the house, trespassing on the grounds of this property, on the 28 April at approximately 3.30am."
