Dog saved from busy M1 now at the vets

A dog rescued from the busy M1 has been taken to a vet to be checked over by police.

Reports that the animal was on the motorway near a Lisburn service station emerged just before lunchtime today.

It is understood that a motorist stopped to help the animal and that they stayed with it until police arrived.

A PSNI spokesperson told Belfast Live: "Police received a report of a dog on the M1 motorway west bound lane between a service station and the Lisburn / Saintfield junction shortly before 12:30pm today (Friday, August 20).

"Officers attended and retrieved the uninjured dog from a motorist before transporting it to a veterinary clinic."

Traffic Watch NI Tweeted earlier: "M1 Westbound - Road users are advised that traffic is slow moving on the approach to Lisburn Services following a dog running into live lanes.

"The animal has been caught and is being held on the hard shoulder until the PSNI can recover it (Dog alive and well ) (12:46)"

It is understood that traffic had returned to normal on the motorway by around 1pm.
