Dog's body found stuffed into bag near Sainsbury's supermarket

A dog's body was found stuffed into a bag near a Sainsbury's supermarket on Friday night.

Emergency services were called to the loopline, close to Springfield Park and Sainsbury's on East Prescot Road, shortly after 7.30pm.

The person who discovered the bag reported to police that there were remains inside before rumours on social media suggested a baby had been found.

Forensic enquiries found this not to be the case and it was confirmed that the body belong to a dog.

Officers and council workers worked together to remove the animal from the area and the scene was stood down a short time later.

Police vehicles were seen stationed close to the park and outside the Sainsbury's.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO: "We can confirm the remains of a dog have been found in a park in Knotty Ash this evening (Friday 1 October).

"Officers attended the loopline close to Springfield Park at about 7.40pm following a report remains had been found in a bag, and established they belonged to a dog.

"The local authority are providing assistance with the removal of the animal."
